创造 Chia 币的 Chia Network 总裁 Gene Hoffman 承认这种利用硬盘挖矿的加密货币破坏了硬盘供应链。比特币是基于所谓的工作量证明，需要执行大量无意义的计算，挖矿需要消耗惊人的电力；而 Chia 币是基于空间证明（Proof of Space），抛弃了计算改用空闲的硬盘空间。在理论上，它消耗很少的电力，但却导致了对硬盘的大量需求。目前有 1200 万 TB 的硬盘空间被用于挖掘 Chia 币。硬盘仍然需要能量生产和运行，而持续的读写被发现会大幅缩短寿命。 Hoffman 表示这个问题只影响最廉价的硬盘。他表示短期内硬盘供应会出现问题价格会上涨，但长期内随着制造商加快生产其价格会下跌。
