研究人员在感染 COVID-19 之后康复的患者骨髓内发现了长期存在的抗体生成细胞，推测感染新冠的患者可能会终身携带抗体，而新冠疫苗也可能具有类似的持久性。骨髓中的浆细胞（BMPC）能在几十年内持续产生抗体。早期的 COVID-19 免疫研究发现，患者在康复后不久体内的抗体水平就大幅下降，因而引发了免疫不持久的担忧。研究人员跟踪了 77 名感染 COVID-19 后出现轻度症状的患者在康复后的抗体水平，发现在 4 个月后抗体就大幅减少，但之后的下降幅度相对缓慢，研究人员在 11 个月后仍然能探测到抗体。为了识别抗体的来源，研究人员收集了记忆性 B 细胞(memory B cell) 和骨髓，发现了稳定的 BMPC 水平。
