非常受欢迎的俄语黑客论坛 XSS 禁止了所有勒索软件话题，此举是为了防止不必要的关注。勒索软件即服务的黑帮如 REvil、LockBit、DarkSide、Netwalker 和 Nefilim 经常在 XSS 上招募下线。在 DarkSide 加密了 Colonial Pipeline 干扰了美国燃油管道运营之后，执法机构和安全研究员越来越多的开始搜寻勒索软件黑帮以及推广勒索软件的网站。XSS 论坛的管理员称，勒索软件主题危险且有毒。
