China removes another 90 apps that allegedly violating users’ digital privacy

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China (MIIT) today announced that 90 apps now face the penalty of removal from domestic application stores in the latest wave of digital privacy campaign.

Details: The removal is based on MIIT's 4th regular app inspection result in 2021, in which 93 apps were found "infriging user rights" in their latest version.

All mentioned apps were told to update the privacy terms and functions, but 85 out of 93 apps didn't take steps to comply with the rectification notice after MIIT's deadline, leaving to be delisted from China's application distribution channels.

Besides, Alibaba-owned ticketing service Damai, Glassdoor-like career and social-networking platform Maimai, and 3 other apps were ordered to delist because they were found to violate privacy regulations multiple times in various versions.

Context: Since November 2019, MIIT began a rectification campaign against apps that "infringe user rights" and fail to comply with regulations. The move is part of a broader crackdown to improve digital privacy protections in the country.

The regulator has been routinely releasing notifications to the public and apps for violations of users' rights since December 2019. In particular, MIIT partners with third-party testing agencies to inspect mobile applications in accordance with laws and regulations such as the Cybersecurity Law and Telecommunications Regulations.

The breaches often relate to, among other things, unauthorized collection of personal information, unauthorized disclosure of personal information to third parties, as well as unnecessary permission requests.

MIIT has released 13 notifications so far. Several hundred apps were ordered to halt their operations or be taken down completely.
