清华大学的研究人员在《Nature Communications》期刊上发表研究报告，估计到 2024 年中国比特币挖矿产生的碳排放将达到 1.3 亿吨，超过了意大利和捷克的年排放量。到 2024 年，比特币挖矿需要的电力将达到 297 兆瓦小时，占到了发电产生的碳排放的 5.4%。研究人员预测到 2024 年挖矿产生的碳排放将达到峰值——届时对矿机的投资和电力开支将超过挖矿所得。研究人员称，在北京等北方地区挖矿的矿工最有可能使用来自燃煤火电站的电力，而贵州、云南和四川的矿工更有可能使用水电。
