A hacker might not even be the cause of the abnormal behavior, but it could alert you to a different security threat, such as an employee not complying with company policy regarding data access or a bug or configuration issue in the API that could become a vulnerability if left unchecked. Detecting and mitigating these abnormalities is simply not possible with conventional security methods.
