"You know, I’ve never spoken to Elon," Apple CEO Tim Cook told the New York Times's Kara Swisher on her podcast "Sway."
The Lede
Although he did not confirm Apple's much-expected entry into the auto business, Cook said Apple "love[s] to integrate hardware, software and services, and find the intersection points of those because we think that’s where the magic occurs." Cook also praised Elon Musk and Tesla Motors during the interview for "keeping the lead for such a long period of time in the EV (electric vehicle) space."Key Details
- "The autonomy itself is a core technology, in my view. If you sort of step back, the car, in a lot of ways, is a robot. An autonomous car is a robot. And so there’s lots of things you can do with autonomy," Cook told Swisher.
- Cook said many of the things Apple investigates internally "never see the light of day" but, he said, "I'm not saying that one will not," referring to Apple's possible car plans.
- Asked about Musk and Tesla, Cook said he has "great admiration and respect for the company."
