Google Keyword Searches with the Lowest and Highest Competition (Data Study)

Do you want to know the top organic Google keyword searches for transactional queries with the lowest competition?

To find niche opportunities, we reviewed our database for the lowest competition Google keyword searches out of 20 billion queries, so we could uncover a variety of searches that were untapped opportunities for a long-tail strategy.

We also reviewed high competition terms that could offer an insight into buyer psychology and behavior as a starting point for a more high-level keyword strategy.

To make the data focused, we used keyword modifiers to generate transactional keyword searches so that the queries we uplifted would have buying intent.

Transactional keywords have considerable value as they target the buyer at the point of intent to buy or take action. Hence transactional or buyer keywords

The results are an insight into the buying habits of online shoppers, offering inspiration and highlighting opportunities for product-based retail and service businesses.

Organic Transactional Keyword Searches with the Most Opportunity

The transactional keywords with the lowest competition and highest search volume in the US are ‘affordable plumbing’ and ‘affordable storage.’ In the UK ‘paver supply near me’ and ‘affordable SEO packages.’

The transactional keywords with the highest competition and lowest search volume in the US are ‘Amazon buy online’ and ‘Buy Buy Baby online.’ In the UK ‘best affordable cordless vacuum’ and ‘best affordable TV’.

The ‘affordable’ modifier had the highest search volumes in the lowest competition results.

Brands That Dominated Transactional Keyword Searches

The brands that dominated high competition searches were Best Buy, Apple, Nintendo, Google, and Zillow in the US. Ebay, Right Move, Tesco, Apple, and Netflix in the UK.

Branded products dominating high competition searches in the US and the UK were Airpod, Xbox, iPhone, and Playstation.

The Most Dominant Products Across Transactional Keyword Searches

Products with the highest competition were laptops, TVs, cars, beds, face masks, and toilet paper in the US. And, cordless vacuums, cars/vehicles, bungalows, pyjamas, and gym clothing in the UK.

For the least competitive queries, results were less focused on specific products, but more on product groups. 

In the US, hobby focused items such as paintball guns, acoustic guitars, fishing kayak, frozen bait, and niche food products such as raw milk, goat meat, halal meat, and sea urchins

The UK didn’t have such obvious groups, but a mix of niche items such as longboard, putter, violins, and luxury portable toilets.

Pandemic influence was evident in the searches for goods such as toilet rolls, face masks, hand sanitizer; home furniture such as desks and patio sets, home entertainment consoles, and laptops.

Niche Opportunities with Low Competition

The low competition results surfaced some fascinating queries that suggested cultural nuances between the UK and the US. The US favored ‘butterfly release’ and the UK ‘dove release.’

There was considerable interest for animals, predominantly ‘Alpacas’ and ‘Llamas’ in the US.

The UK had a strong interest in property abroad, especially ‘cheap property in Bali and Bulgaria.’

Transactional Keyword Modifiers with Buying Intent

To find transactional keywords, we used modifying keywords to generate buying-based queries. 

Out of an initial list of modifiers, we found and removed some crossover in results, such as ‘sale’, ‘for sale’, ‘buy’, ‘buy online’ and ‘free’ didn’t return results with buying intent. 

Transactional Modifiers with Most Buying Intent:

  • Affordable
  • Cheap
  • For sale
  • Near me
  • Price
  • Pricing

For the UK results we dropped ‘Pricing’ and just used ‘Price’ to maintain quality of results.

As a note, ‘vs’ as a modifier delivered some fascinating results of comparison searches, but as these were mainly sports-focused and not relevant to the study we removed them. Although, if you have a 10-minute coffee break, try running *vs* wildcard searches in Semrush just for fun.

Low Competition Google Keyword Searches for Transactional Queries

High competition keywords may be considered valuable, but the other end of the scale is where you can find some of the best opportunities. Combine the strength of several low competition keywords and you may end up with a solid long-tail strategy that can deliver significant quick wins.

Insights for Transactional Low Competition Keyword Searches in the US:

  • Affordable results were mostly skewed towards home or car-based queries. 'Affordable auto,’ 'affordable auto sales,’ and 'affordable auto glass' having significant traffic. 
  • Cheap queries had considerable results for purchasing social media likes/followers such as TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. And several searches for jerseys from China.
  • For sale queries heavily involved animal sales. Cattle, bulls, sheep, horses, and a considerable amount for alpacas and llamas.
  • Price and Pricing results had an interesting definition between personal services [Price] such as fishing, mobile bartending, wedding, and balloon columns. And work-based services [pricing], virtual assistant, competitor pricing, answering service, and social media packages.

Insights for Transactional Low Competition Keyword Searches in the UK:

  • Affordable queries were dominated by variations on SEO and web design-related services.
  • Buy results were heavily dominated with buying social media likes and follows (the similar US queries were under the cheap modifier). 
  • For sale focused on property and house sale queries. Bali being a popular destination, Chiang Mai, Marrakech, Costa del Sol, and Mallorca.
  • Near me searches saw plenty of niche building services such as master thatcher, paver supply, stained glass artists, and apple pressing. And many animal-based queries: small animal boarding, dog physio, canine hydrotherapy, horse therapy, and dove release.

High Competition Transactional Keywords US

High competition Google keyword searches have a significant conversion value, hence why they are so competitive. Although they could require a considerable budget to compete, the value in these keyword tables are the seeds of ideas to find opportunities in different niches.

Insights for Transactional High Competition Keyword Searches in the US:

  • Affordable queries are skewed towards non-branded home products: vacuum cleaners, washers, beds, hairdryers, laptops.
  • Buy online searches are heavily skewed towards buying home grocery products in bulk and a considerable amount of searches for toilet roll, face mask, and hand sanitizer (most likely a result of the pandemic). Some branded searches for Amazon, Target, Walmart, Nintendo, and Playstation.
  • Near me searches are dominated by branded queries for food outlets such as Dominos, Taco Bell, Starbucks, and Applebees. Also, searches for branded retail such as Bed Bath and Beyond, Old Navy, Lowes, Macy’s, and Gamestop.
  • Price queries are focused on branded electrical goods, especially Xbox, Apple Watch iPhone, and Playstation.

Insights for Transactional High Competition Keyword Searches in the UK:

  • Affordable searches are focused on non-branded small electrical goods such as vacuums, laptops, headphones, and skincare/make-up.
  • Buy keywords are focused on branded small electronics such as Chromecast, iPhone, Airpods, Kindle, Xbox, and Playstation.
  • Cheap queries are based on non-branded small home products such as dinner sets, garden chairs, high chairs, wardrobes, and several variations on pyjamas!
  • Near me is focused on branded supermarkets and home retail shop queries. Asda, Tesco, Aldi, B&Q, Currys. And several searches for National Trust — which echoes the demand for outdoor walks during the pandemic.

Low Competition Google Keyword Searches with Highest Search Volume

In the US, the majority of keywords with the lowest competition and highest search volumes were based around home trade services, such as plumbing, storage, pest control, and roofing.

‘Affordable’ was a dominant modifier.

The Top 10 Lowest Competition Transactional Keyword Searches with the Highest Search Volume (UK):

In the UK, SEO services-related keywords dominated the least competitive keywords. As these queries have a reasonable CPC, this indicates a strong opportunity with value.

High Competition Google Keyword Searches with the Lowest Search Volume

The Top 10 Highest Competition Transactional Keyword Searches with the Lowest Search Volume (US):

On the opposite side, the lowest search volumes, but the greatest competition were all big brand names: Amazon, Buy Buy Baby, Nintendo, and Target. Highlighting the dominance of competitive SERPs by big brands.

Unsurprisingly, face masks have suddenly become the most important item to buy in the last year. Along with TVs, consoles, and robot vacuum cleaners!

The Top 10 Highest Competition Transactional Keyword Searches with the Lowest Search Volume (UK):

In the UK, all the competitive keyword searches with low volume fell into the ‘affordable’ modifier. Brits love a bargain!

Cordless vacuums topped the products in the UK, while eye creams and Vitamin C creams are dominant. Probably as a result of so much time spent looking at your own face in Zoom.

Methodology

Data was collected from 20 billion keywords in the Semrush Keyword Magic Tool database, in March 2021. 

Competition was based on the Semrush Keyword Difficulty metric — a calculation of domain authority and page authority for organic SERPs.

The most competitive results had a minimum of 1,000 monthly searches and sorted by the highest Keyword Difficulty score. Some modifiers had to be adjusted based on their results. For example, ‘affordable’ was sorted on a minimum of 100 monthly searches due to limited results.

The least competitive results had a minimum of 100 monthly searches and sorted by the lowest Keyword Difficulty score.

Lists were cleaned to remove: NSFW, religion-based queries, drugs and pharmaceutical queries, sex-related queries, ‘buy a degree’ queries, firearms and hunting queries. Direct COVID queries were also removed to avoid skewing results.

Year-based searches were removed for anything prior to 2020.

Some non-transactional keywords were also removed that were potentially skewing results, such as ‘Best Buy customer service’ related queries that dominated the ‘best’ modifier.

Any repetition from keyword variants that are grouped by Google were removed, such as multiples or country suffix. For example, ‘Rightmove houses for sale’, ‘Rightmove house for sale’, ‘Rightmove houses for sale uk.
