LCD panel production to continue indefinitely, report claims

Samsung is one of the biggest display manufacturers in the world, and as an interesting tidbit, it also supplies the OLED panels Apple uses on the iPhone.

But Samsung Display, the company’s unit in charge of building screens, is always looking into new technology, and giving up on old stuff is part of the push for innovation.

As a result, Samsung originally planned to stop the production of LCD panels by December 31, which means theoretically, we should be just two days away from the month the South Koreans wave goodbye to these panels once and for all.

But as it turns out, the production of LCD panels would continue without a deadline, and it’s all because they’re still selling like hotcakes. If you’re wondering how this is possible since more and more companies are betting big on OLED, it all comes down to the crazy year 2020 has ended up becoming. Because so many people stayed home due to the global health crisis, sales of monitors and TVs have been on the rise, and needless to say, many of these devices were using LCD panels.

No deadline this time

According to local reports, Samsung will continue making LCD panels at the L8 fab in the Asan plant, and right now, it looks like the company wants to do this for as long as needed.

This makes perfect sense, especially because nobody knows when the pandemic is supposed to come to an end, but on the other hand, don’t be too surprised if Samsung actually gives up on LCD screens once and for all once things come back to normal.

For now, everything is still in the rumor stage, but it all makes sense for Samsung, especially since the LCD business keeps bringing home the bacon.
