根据发表在《Nature Communications》期刊上的一项研究，对 38,701 名成年人的研究显示，孤独者有着独特的大脑信号。参与者包括 47.5% 的男性和 52.5% 的女性，年龄在 40–69 岁之间，平均年龄 55 岁，13% 的人称感到孤独。MRI 大脑扫描显示，孤独者独特的大脑特征包括不同大脑区域的体积变化和大脑区域之间的通信方式。这些变化可能与孤独者的思维模式有关，孤独者有着超过平均水平的想象中的社交活动。
