1972年3月2日，美国发射了“先驱者”10号（Pioneer10）宇宙飞船对木星进行考察。发射该宇宙飞船的目的是对木星的富氢大气圈、云层覆盖和辐射带进行探测。它是第一艘越过小行星带的飞行器，第一艘近距离观测木星的飞行器，并于1973年12月3日发回了第一组木星的近距离拍摄的图像。1983年6月，“先驱者”10号完成任务后飞出海王星轨道，成为首个飞离太阳系的航天器。人类最后一次收到它的信号，是在2003年1月22日。当时，它距离地球100亿公里。它的燃料早已耗尽，正依靠惯性朝太阳系外飞行，预计在约200万年后到达距离地球大约68光年远的毕宿五恒星。
