WA Police Force opens new command centre at Telstra facility Featured

By Kenn Anthony Mendoza

The Western Australia (WA) Police Force announced it inaugurated a new state operations command centre at Telstra’s Wellington Street facility.

Touted in what Telstra claims to be an “Australian-first,” the site’s location was chosen for its security, latency, resiliency, and proximity to telecommunications infrastructure.

In a statement, the force said the hub “combines the services and resources of the former State Operations Command Centre (SOCC) and Police Operations Centre” into one high-tech facility.

The force said during the design phase, it engaged with leaders and operation centres management to ensure the SOCC is ready to meet current and future technology-based policing needs.

The technology features custom-designed walls that can display live feeds from the Police Air Wing, body-worn cameras, security camera footage, and automatic numberplate recognition alerts to provide real-time decision-making.

“To future proof the facility, the SOCC's technical and network design includes over 50 kilometres of data cable, 200 power circuits, 13 kilometres of power cable, more than half a dozen switchboards and two kilometres of fibre optic cable,” the statement said.

"This modern, multi-agency approach to policing and other emergencies is of significant benefit and will provide improved outcomes for all Western Australians,” commented WA premier Roger Cook.

"The high-tech facility improves real-time data sharing from the frontline and other agency partners, giving officers vital information when responding to emergencies across WA,” added police minister Paul Papalia.

"This will be further enhanced when our State-wide satellite communications rollout is complete, providing 550 vehicles and 129 police stations in regional or remote parts of WA with metropolitan equivalent connectivity,” he said.

Telstra said the Wellington Street exchange is anchored on the idea of “resiliency,” adding there are 88 power systems in the building, including battery banks and four marine grade generators.

“It also provides excellent power and connectivity resiliency and will put WA Police as close as they can get to our state’s most critical piece of telecommunications infrastructure,” said Telstra InfraCo CEO Brendon Riley in a separate statement.

“The move will offer significant benefits for both WA Police and the incredibly diverse and widespread community they serve, and Telstra couldn’t be prouder of our ongoing partnership.”
