Hey, I'm Mehdi, maker of TalkNative. I've been learning Japanese for a few years now and I quickly understood that immersion with native speakers was key to progress effectively. I've been using the Tandem app to chat with natives and it was great at first, but my usage quickly went down to zero for several reasons: the timezone difference limited our chances to talk per day, we each have our own schedule (job etc.), you never really know when you should practice your language and when they should practice theirs, and finally I always had to make extra effort to keep the conversation alive.
I was spending more time socializing than practicing, and when AI and LLMs became easy to access (thanks OpenAI), I started building the TalkNative app, to be able to actively practice with a native speaker whenever I wanted.
