No, the chirping is not in your head.

Facebook users have reported a new sound that appears while scrolling on the app on their cellphones.

The noise is part of a new update meant to make scrolling "more engaging and interesting," according to Dataconomy.

USA TODAY reached out to Facebook for comment on the latest feature.

Like any social media update, the bird sound may just take some time getting used to. However, some don't need time to realize the effect is not for them.

How to stop Facebook from chirping when you scroll

Anyone can disable the new chirping sound effect in settings on the mobile app. Here are step-by-step instructions:

  1. Open the Menu by clicking the bottom right button of the Facebook app

  2. Under Settings and Privacy, click the Settings button.

  3. Click the Media button under Preferences

  4. Under Sounds, toggle the In-App Sound to off.

Turning off the "In-App Sound" feature will end the chirping as well as the noises users hear when pressing the Like, Comment and Share buttons. But don't worry, users will still be able to hear sound from videos.
