Sky Perfect Jsat eyes to eliminate 100 million particles of space debris with laser technology

By Kenn Anthony Mendoza

Japanese corporate group and satellite communication and multi-channel pay TV company Sky Perfect Jsat announced it has established a new firm Orbital Lasers to develop a laser-based space debris removal technology to eliminate more than 100 million particles of space debris larger than one millimetre in Earth’s orbit.

The company said it will develop the technology in 2025. In 2027, it plans to develop a prototype. It will begin space removal services in 2029.

The project came into fruition after Sky Perfect Jsat and research institution Riken jointly designed a payload for the satellite to remove space debris using laser ablation.

The payload will emit a laser beam to vaporise/ionise the surface of space debris, creating a pulse of energy that can rotate the object and then decelerate it so it slowly falls toward the Earth’s atmosphere to burn the object.

Orbital Lasers president and CEO Tadanori Fukushima said sales will target domestic and foreign companies engaged in the removal of space debris.

The company claimed the method of removing space debris, which is typically moving at 7.5 kilometres per second, is safe because “there is no physical contact.”

The company also claimed fuel is not needed to move the debris itself, saving operational costs.

The new firm will also offer earth observation services by using LiDAR laser technology.

The LiDAR system, which will be incorporated into a satellite, uses a laser to scan a target, and calculates the time it takes for the light to travel to the target and back is measured.

Satellite LiDAR, a separate system from the space debris removal laser, measures the height of trees, buildings, and the earth’s surface, collecting data to create three-dimensional maps of the target area or object.

Citing cases, Sky Perfect Jsat said Satellite LiDAR can be used to assess vegetation density and potential CO2 absorption capacity as well as create high-resolution maps of the Earth's surface.

The system can also be used in development planning and infrastructure design and cargo monitoring such as dockside loading of iron ore, and mining.

Sky Perfect Jsat has signed a contract with the Japan aerospace exploration agency Jaxa to study earth observation LiDAR satellites system and its potential for future commercialisation.

“Moreover, space-based services play a crucial role in disaster situations, offering a valuable means to assess the extent of damage and facilitate emergency communication,” the company said.

“The significance of space systems, as infrastructure supporting the economy and society, is anticipated to continue to increase in the future,” it added.
