隋开皇十二年，有沙弥道信，十四岁，来礼谒三祖僧璨。
初礼三祖，道信便问：“愿和尚慈悲，乞与解脱法门。”
三祖反问道：“谁缚汝？”
道信道：“无人缚。”
三祖道：“何更求解脱乎？”
道信闻言，当下大悟。

痛苦、烦恼、不自由，都源于内心对自己的束缚。
没人能束缚我自己，除了我自己。
自己是一切的根源
