The HyperDrive USB4 mobile dock makes your laptop a powerhouse anywhere

By David M Williams

The HyperDrive USB4 mobile dock is small and light but loaded with ports that make your USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 MacBook, Windows laptop, or Chromebook, an absolute powerhouse with multiple monitor support, high-speed USB, gigabit Ethernet, and more. No matter where you go, the dock will turn your laptop into a battle station.

The HyperDrive USB4 mobile dock is available now through Targus. It's a slim, super-portable gadget that easily slips into your pocket or carry bag, but is festooned with ports. This includes integrated HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4, 2x USB-A 10Gbps ports, 1x USB-C with 85W power delivery, gigabit Ethernet, and a 3.5mm audio combo jack. And, it connects to your MacBook, Windows laptop, or ChromeBook with a single USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 connection.

The hub can drive a single 8K 30Hz display, and for devices that support MST (multi-stream transport), dual 4K 60Hz displays. The USB-C socket will not only connect but also deliver 85W of power, allowing you to charge your phone or tablet at the same time. With the Ethernet and super-fast 10Gbps USB-A ports, you can ensure speedy file transfers and networking.

HyperUSB4DockSide

iTWire has been using this dock and it's been super-helpful for working between home and office, as well as internationally, allowing me to plug in monitors, cameras, keyboards, mice, and USB sticks. Plus, I could keep other devices charged without needing another power socket - especially handy when overseas.

When it comes to multiple monitors, it's important to note macOS does not support DisplayPort's multi-stream transport or MST. You can read more (along with possible workarounds) here; that's not a limitation of the dock, or even the Mac hardware itself (because, interestingly, if you use Apple's BootCamp to run Windows on a MacBook, MST is available), but simply, unfortunately, macOS itself provides no MST support.

Provided you're aware, it's not a limitation. It simply means you can use either HDMI or DisplayPort with your MacBook to drive a single monitor, up to 8K. However, for Windows and ChromeOS users, you can run a single monitor, or two monitors concurrently, up to 4K 60Hz each. And, of course, you still have the laptop panel to use at the same time, on any operating system.

HyperUSB4DockPorts

Coming in at a tiny 110 grams, and measuring 8.49cm wide x 8.49cm deep x 1.94cm tall, you'd be hard-pressed to find a portable dock that delivers more wallop. It comes with a two-year warranty and is available from Targus for $249.95, with free shipping.

If you're a road warrior and operate in different locations you don't need to settle for a cramped screen and keyboard and limited connectivity; do yourself (and your eyes) a favour, and set yourself up with the Hyperdrive USB4 mobile dock so you can always stretch out at any desk you find.
