TSMC announces further delays expected for 3nm Arizona plant Featured

The world's biggest manufacturer of semiconductors has been hit by a further delay to a planned US$40 billion (A$60.85 billion) factory in Arizona, with the plant now due to come on stream only in 2027 or 2028.
Bloomberg reported that the plant, to manufacture 3nm chips and the second announced by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company in the US state, was hit by the level of US Government subsidies.
TSMC chairman Mark Liu told the company's earnings conference in Taipei on Thursday: "Our overseas decisions are based on customer needs and the necessary level of government subsidy, or support.”
He said the company was in talks with American officials about incentives and tax credits for the new factory.
The company announced the 3nm plant in November 2022 after having said in May 2020 it would build a 5nm plant in the US state.
The move to build chip factories in the US has been driven by Washington seeking to increase its share of manufacturing in the industry as it pursues trade measures against China.
In July last year, TSMC said it was facing a shortage of experienced labour and seeking to bring in workers from Taiwan to complete the factory by its planned completion date of 2025.
In 2022, US President Joe Biden announced an initiative known as the Chips and Science Act to provide more funding to semiconductor makers in his bid to increase manufacturing of chips in the country.
But thus far, though the Act became law more than a year ago, no grants have been given to either TSMC or Intel Corporation, two of the bigger chip makers.
TSMC announced plans for a plant in Japan much later than the Arizona ventures but the Japanese Government has already provided funds to the company, Bloomberg reported, adding that production was slated to begin late this year as per the current schedule.
