It’s no secret that good health and vegetables go hand in hand. One notable health benefit of vegetables is they help promote better gut health. A healthy gut can aid digestion, bolster your immune system and support mental health. However, one veggie in particular is an underrated nutritional powerhouse. According to a recent Instagram post by Will Bulsiewicz, MD, MSCI (or Dr. B for short), gastroenterologist and gut health expert, including Brussels sprouts as a staple in your diet can be a game-changer for your gut health and chronic disease risk.

In the post, Dr. B explains how the fiber content of Brussels sprouts makes them a superfood for gut health. Studies show that fiber helps improve gut health by promoting the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria, supporting regular bowel movements and maintaining a healthy gut environment.

“These [Brussels sprouts] are incredible and great for your gut. Every single one of these sweet little Brussels has a gram of fiber,” said Dr. B in the post.

Furthermore, Dr. B highlights research that shows the antioxidants found in Brussels sprouts have other significant health benefits. “Brussels are an amazing source of antioxidants that fight inflammation in the body,” said Dr. B.

According to a 2022 study published in Hindawi, cruciferous vegetables like Brussels sprouts have antioxidant properties that can reduce your cancer risk. As Dr. B explained in the Instagram post, “When you think of cruciferous, think about cancer-fighting. Research has actually shown that people who consume more cruciferous vegetables have a lower risk of developing several types of cancers.”

Interestingly, Dr. B points out that raw Brussels sprouts might have more antioxidants than cooked ones. So, if you’re not a fan of cooked Brussels sprouts, Dr. B suggests, “Shave some Brussels into your salad. It’s a good way to have them.”
