Moonlighter

a retro dungeon crawler

2023-12-22

Today's Video Game A Day is Moonlighter on the Switch. It's a SNES retro inspired pixel art action adventure where you fight in dungeons, but also elements like Stardew Valley where you build up the town you're in.

It's a twist on the typical action adventure. You're not the hero, but the shopkeep in the town outside a dungeon. But you do go into the dungeon in your sparetime to restock your store. Hence the title I guess, you're just moonlighting as an adventurer.

You also have to figure out what to price the things you sell by gauging customers reactions. You also have to factor in things like selling too much of an item floods the market making them worth less.

The town you're in is pretty cute and cozy. There's Christmas decorations around it, so I guess things change on the real-time seasons?

You can improve things in the town, like invest in a blacksmith. This will let you improve weapons and armor, which will let you go deeper into the dungeon, which means getting better things to sell. And going deeper into the dungeon means you learn more of the story that the dungeon isn't all that it appears.

The fighting is a little awkward, but that might just need to get used to.

I can see playing this more, going as far as I can in dungeons and selling stuff to build up the town.

Good thing I'm starting early, because as I was starting this game I saw the Switch store had a couple more games I was interested in for sale with 90% off for just a few bucks so had to get those too.

A neat reference I saw was the command line interface guidelines. I'd like to go through this to get some pointers for the command line in general but I'd also like to make decent comamnd line tools.
