Faster arXiv with Fastly – arXiv blog

A few weeks ago, the folks at https://fastly.com generously offered arXiv an in-kind donation of CDN services (see Content delivery network – Wikipedia). Yesterday, we turned it on for all content served from https://arxiv.org. That includes our home page, listings, abstracts, and papers — both PDF and HTML (more on that soon).

Fastly uses around 100 POPs (Point of Presence) around the world to cache and deliver content. See the Fastly network map. This greatly speeds delivering content to end-users. In our preliminary “first day” measurement, about 60% of the web requests to arxiv.org are being served from a local Fastly POP, improving performance and taking load off the arXiv servers. In particular, users outside of North America should see performance improvement.

We welcome your feedback concerning your experience with arXiv. Whether positive or negative, we want to hear from you so we can continue to improve arxiv.org. Leave a comment in the Reply section below.

If you’re experience problems using arXiv, such a page timeouts or missing content, then please file a bug report using our support portal.
