Review: Aspera R10 is built to withstand life's hard knocks

The Aspera range of low-budget smartphones have one characteristic in common: each model emphasises certain features. The rest of the features common to smartphones these days are also present – but at an acceptable level.

For example, the R10 — the device that is the subject of this review — can take its fair share of knocks and survive in a wet and dusty environment. In Australia, that means it is an ideal phone for tradies. It retails for $299, $20 more than an earlier model in the same line.

The R10 is sturdy, can survive more than one drop on the ground, and is built to protect against both water and dust. The device has a rubberised outer body for shock absorption, a completely sealed battery and has a seal for the USB charge point which also doubles as a headphone socket.

The R10 has an IP — or Ingress Protection — rating of 68. Let's break that down. The first number, 6, means it is dust-tight, the top rating on a 7-digit scale that goes from 0 to 6.

The second digit, 8, means it is protected against the effects of continuous immersion in water. This is the second highest rating on a 10-digit scale that runs from 0 to 9. [A rating of 9 means it is protected against high pressure and temperature water jets.]

According to the International Electrotechnical Commission, in the case of a phone with the rating 8, “ingress of water in quantities causing harmful effects shall not be possible when the enclosure is continuously immersed in water under conditions which shall be agreed between the manufacturer and user but which are more severe than for numeral 7”.

The main camera takes photos that are more than just acceptable.

When I asked Aspera's representative for a review unit, I mentioned that would like to drop it from whatever height the manufacturer allows and also to bury it in sand to test the claims made by Aspera Mobile". I was assured that the company would stand by whatever claims it made on the box. I must say that the device lived up to the manufacturer's claims.

The R10 is a little taller and heavier than most other smartphones I have reviewed. It is 175.6mm in height and weighs in at 215 grammes. As a point of contrast, the phone I use, an Oppo Reno10 5G, is 162.43mm tall and weighs 185 grammes. The R10 feels really solid in one's grip.

The device comes with Android 13 and hardly any bloatware. I am somewhat obsessive when it comes to removing apps that any manufacturer has included because of what I perceive to be deals with other companies, but in the case of the R10 I could only find three apps that could be removed. Even the Facebook book is part of the system software and cannot be removed.

A distance shot.

But that is fine because only 21GB is taken up by the software; the phone has 128GB storage and 4GB of memory. Built atop a MediaTek 8768 Octacore 2.0GHz SoC, the response time is fine and one really has no reason to complain.

The rear camera is 13MP and the front-facing camera is 8MP, allowing for face recognition and and HD resolution video recording. There are no fancy features but the photos are good. One needs to keep in mind that a tradie often has to show a client a photo or two reflecting the work that he/she has carried out. The photos in this review were taken with the R10.

The R10 comes with a charger and headphones. The latter are not really suited to listening to music, but then again, they are fine for basic tasks. The 5100mAh battery is more than sufficient to last a full day.

The device supports NFC and has two 4G SIM slots. It can accommodate an SD card up to 128GB.

The main camera handles detail adequately.

The R10 was released in Australia in October and can be bought at Big W, Retravision, Better Electrical, Mobileciti, selected IGAs and selected BP service stations.
