Launtel has the highest speeds during peak hours, ACCC report says Featured

By Kenn Anthony Mendoza

Australian internet provider Launtel has emerged as the best performing telco with customers receiving 103.8% of their NBN plan’s maximum speeds during peak hours between 7pm and 11pm, the ACCC’s 23rd Measuring Broadband Australia report found.

Telstra followed suit with its customers getting 101% of maximum plan speeds during busy hours. Exetel closely followed Telstra at 100.9%.

The report also uncovered the performance of other 11 telcos. These include Aussie Broadband, Dodo, Exetel, iiNet, iPrimus, Launtel, Optus, Telstra, TPG Telecom, Superloop, and Vodafone.

The ACCC report says consumers in both urban and regional Australia on NBN fixed-line broadband services have seen an improvement to their internet speeds since February 2022.

The ACCC compared broadband performance last September 2023.

The report found that NBN fixed-line download speeds of consumers (both urban and regional services) during busy hours hit 98.8% plans of their plans’ download speeds, up from 98.5% last quarter.

“The internet is an essential service for Australians, making it vital that all consumers receive reliable internet speeds irrespective of where they live,” ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey said.

“It is encouraging to see the gap in broadband speeds narrowing and regional Australians receiving largely similar speeds to those in urban areas.”

However, regional customers are still impacted by underperforming services than those in urban areas. Seven percent of regional NBN services underperform compared to 4% of urban services. The ACCC said the limitations with fibre to the node are to blame.

The ACCC said most fibre to the node customers will be able to upgrade to fibre to the premise by the end of 2025.

“We expect NBN Co and broadband retailers to work together to improve their underperforming services so that all Australians, regardless of their location or connection type, have access to the broadband speeds they are paying for,” concluded Brakey.

The report also includes measuring the performance of fixed wireless NBN services, which saw a slight improvement this quarter, with busy hour download speeds hitting at 89.5% of plan speeds compared to the 87.5% of the previous report.
