Our Next Energy Confirms the Appointment of Paul Humphries as CEO

A new CEO has taken the reins at Novi-based battery startup Our Next Energy Inc., as confirmed by the company on Sunday evening. Paul Humphries, previously a member of ONE’s board and with over 40 years of experience in manufacturing and operations, assumes the leadership position. Meanwhile, Mujeeb Ijaz, the company’s founder and former CEO, transitions to the role of vice chair of the board and will lead product engineering as the chief technology officer.

In a statement, Ijaz expressed that change is essential for growth and sees this transition as an opportunity for the company. This change follows ONE’s confirmation in November of a 25% reduction in its workforce, involving the layoff of 128 employees, including 82 in Michigan. The downsizing aligns with ONE’s shift from research and development to scaling up production.

October marked the commencement of pilot production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells at the battery plant in Van Buren Township. Earlier in 2023, the production of Aries LFP battery packs began at Piston Automotive in southeast Michigan.

Humphries remarked, expressing the continued need for a U.S.-based battery manufacturer, highlighting the importance of domestically produced cells that enhance range, energy, density and use abundant materials.

Moreover, ONE announced adjustments in its corporate structure, with Faysal Sohail, the second founding board member, taking the role of chairman. Sohail, described as an experienced entrepreneur and venture company builder from Silicon Valley, assumes this position within the company’s leadership.
