Why does Android still have a bad reputation in North America?

First impressions last, and they last for a long time.

Not allowed sign for Androids.

Over the past decade, there has been an ongoing debate on the internet, over which phone operating system is superior — Android or iOS.

Android phones account for a larger share of the smartphone market in Europe (over 70%) compared to North America (around 45%), which suggests that Androids aren’t as widely accepted specifically in North America.

When I was in 10th grade, I bought my first Android phone, the HTC One M8. At that time, Android phones were widely seen within my friend group as more powerful and feature-rich alternatives to iPhones.

However, as I got older, owning an Android device became looked down upon by some suggesting that Androids are “uncool” and “poor”. This is further supported by the statistics conducted by Piper Sandler, where 87% of teenagers in the United States currently use iPhones.

Researchers found that among Gen Z, Apple rules: Out of the thousands of teenagers surveyed, 87% said they own an iPhone, and 88% of them expect the iPhone to be their next phone.

It also seems that Android users are often ridiculed over the color of the message bubble.

“If it’s not a blue message, I’m not going to bother flirting with you further,” Brooklyn resident and freelance designer Katie McDonough tells The Post. “I’m just like, ‘Why don’t you have an iPhone?’ ”

Early in my university career, I worked full-time as a sales representative at one of Canada’s largest cell service carriers. I noticed two main categories of buyers — the Apple loyalists who would not switch from iOS, and the budget-conscious Android users who could not afford iPhones. Despite the advances Android has made, it still has a poor reputation among some people.
