"I’m only one person. I can’t stop climate change or save the world by myself. Why should I even try?"

While it's true that you and I can only take tiny steps in comparison with the horrendous damage wrought by corporations and billionaires, we still should make the right eco-friendly choices.

If our actions can make even a small difference in reducing loss and pain for a few people or a few species, then it's worth it. If nothing else, we will feel better about ourselves. And with our improved mental and emotional well-being, we will have more energy to fight capitalism.

Four-panel cartoon drawing shows a middle-aged white woman doing these four things... LITTLE THINGS YOU CAN DO TO SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT 1. Bike to work. 2. Try meatless Mondays. 3. Guillotine the corrupt corporate class that is poisoning the planet for profit. 4. Recycle.

I really want an app I can install easily on my laptop / desktop, which basically supports the #Peertube network, while it's open.

Maybe it helps seed videos / instances of my choice. Maybe it helps with transcoding... or automatic subtitling via speech recognition. It just seems silly that when I have storage, CPU and bandwidth to spare that the Peertube network won't use it just because I don't have any videos to share, and thus have no need of an instance...

What if, though... what if...

According to #Peertube Statistics ( @peertube ) just on their *known* servers only, there were 17,671 Peertube views...

In the last 2 hours.

17,671...

Now yes, I'm sure SurveillanceTube can boast vastly bigger numbers, but this is still extraordinary stat for an early stage project that still requires #SelfHosting and a pretty significant chunk of storage, CPU and bandwidth.

Improvements to sharing the load for all of these between nodes will only accelerate this growth exponentially imo.

While I dislike #Google deliberately slowing down browsers / extensions they don't like, it got me thinking... what if the same thing was done back? Is that OK? Like an extension that places an error looking message on screen to Chrome users saying something like "This page is slow due to Google Chrome." and then delivered assets at a bare minimal speed.

I'm not convinced this is a good or bad idea at t his point. I just find it interesting as a thought exercise.

Gut #microbiota and #neurological effects of #glyphosate

by Lola Rueda-Ruzafa , Francisco Cruz, Pablo Roman, Diana Cardona

August, 2019

"There are currently various concerns regarding certain #environmental #toxins and the possible impact they can have on developmental diseases. #Glyphosate (Gly) is the most utilised #herbicide in #agriculture, although its widespread use is generating controversy in the scientific world because of its probable carcinogenic effect on human cells. Gly performs as an inhibitor of 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phospate synthase (EPSP synthase), not only in plants, but also in bacteria. An inhibiting effect on EPSP synthase from intestinal microbiota has been reported, affecting mainly beneficial bacteria. To the contrary, Clostridium spp. and Salmonella strains are shown to be resistant to Gly. Consequently, researchers have suggested that Gly can cause #dysbiosis, a phenomenon which is characterised by an imbalance between beneficial and pathogenic #microorganisms. The overgrowth of bacteria such as #clostridia generates high levels of noxious metabolites in the #brain, which can contribute to the development of neurological deviations. This work reviews the impact of Gly-induced intestinal #dysbiosis on the central nervous system, focusing on emotional, neurological and #neurodegenerative disorders. A wide variety of factors were investigated in relation to brain-related changes, including highlighting #genetic abnormalities, pregnancy-associated problems, diet, infections, vaccines and heavy metals. However, more studies are required to determine the implication of the most internationally used herbicide, Gly, in behavioural disorders."

Periodic reminder to use the Library Extension if you want to see what books are available at your local library / libraries - not only using sites like GoodReads but also if you find yourself Amazon'ing.

This is not an ad, just a PSA for to help rekindle relationships with libraries and save :coin_animal_crossing:

:chrome_logo: + :firefox_logo:

Edit to add: you do not need to enter any data / library card info. It uses public search for whatever library you choose.

So, Trans Lifeline has been having trouble making ends meet of late. So much so that they’ve started having to cut management and hours.

This is sub-fucking-optimal.

If you’ve got a few bucks to spare, these folks are doing insanely good work and need to keep the lights on.

Also, if you like this without boosting, it’s basically a hate-crime. Just so we’re clear. 😉

Rules to help journalists avoid the mistakes of 2016 in 2024:

- Ban repeat liars from live interviews

- Never put a lie in the headline

- Use a truth sandwich when reporting on lies

- Don’t take the bait (stop rewarding drama with visibility)

- Abandon the social media algorithm (don’t let Xitter dictate the news cycle)

Any others?

The nation’s largest egg producer saw profits rise 600 percent last year. A U.S. Senate candidate's family business was found liable in an egg price-fixing scheme. This often isn’t inflation. It’s price gouging.

we can reach Net Zero only by transforming collective energy, industrial and agricultural systems."

Then, he says, people need to know we can combat climate change. In other words, we need a sense of agency. The climate scientist Michael Mann says, “Urgency without agency just leads us towards despair and defeatism.” That produces an attitude of, “We’re doomed, so let’s just keep partying.” People could acquire that sense of agency by shrinking their own carbon footprints. Admittedly, this risks being a diversion. Even a billion humans cutting their emissions wouldn’t achieve anything significant, with seven billion others getting richer and emitting more. Obsessing about personal footprints also plays into the strategy of fossil-fuel producers, which love to cast climate change as an individual moral responsibility. In reality, we can reach Net Zero only by transforming collective energy, and industrial and agricultural systems. But, argues Blau, if people cut their own emissions, they can use their newfound sense of agency as citizens to elect parties that will execute a green...

#SepiaSearch is your companion for finding #PeerTube videos, playlists and channels from the PeerTube federation

We're currently testing #Meilisearch in favour of #ElasticSearch to index the data.

As it's difficult to know if the results are relevant in all languages, we're looking for public feedback!

So don't hesitate to test this new engine on https://meilisearch.sepiasearch.org/ and let us know what you think :)

i see so many people today fired from jobs and immediately looking to go wage slaving for some other corporation.

please consider alternatives. band together, build cooperatives. let's claw back some amount of control over our lives. i, for one, am sick of corporate feudal lords and am looking for accomplices for an escape.
