@asb Regarding "top byte ignore" and such things, on x86 you can also use SIB addressing to do something similar portably, e.g. [8*rax] to load from an 8-byte aligned address which effectively ignores the top 3 bits of the value in rax which can therefore be used for pointer tagging.
