Stay DESTINED or Create DESTINY

Sachin Tendulkar

We often hear the stereotypical notion that what if Sachin Tendulkar’s parents had put him to singing instead of Cricket, and these examples haven’t left Late Lata Mangeshkar either.  Let us confess we’re all obsessed with success stories and paint the same color thereof. Parents feel that their children should be groomed in the same style, same field as the categorized successful people with the best possible option available in their reach. seldom do they wish to take the out-of-the-box attitude, not taking a risk as most people consider it to be.

With due respect to Sachin and Lataji, I would like to dwell on this approach with a little illustration. One of my colleague walks into my office to inform his son has taken admission to Forensic Science – a subject that was never in my to-do list or faintest of the capacity building options ever. But then I appreciate my colleague to ignite the spark in me to go off-board but in-track with our choices.

Mr purview in these situations is that if Sachin’s parents would have put him to singing, his name would have been synonymous with singing – a singing maestro indeed – for eg. as in this fictitious case.

He would have made a world for himself with singing instead of cricket today. With his passion to Cricket, he was so engrossed that the outside world did not matter to him,” Sachin Tendulkar told the YouTube show ‘In-Depth with Graham’, conducted by journalist Graham Bensinger. This would have been true with singing instead.

Like Sachin todays children’s family members should ensure that it should not allow fame to affect them and maintain a balance between success and failure. They should give them stability in life because it did not matter if they performed well or not, once they come back home, they should be their normal self.

Like Sachin’s father once told him that his talent was a God-given gift ‘- it would have been true with singing too in this case and he would have been holding it with both hands. So give that self-belief to all the kids out there and stand by to see how they use their skill set (acquired), passion, dedication, time and balance the curricular and extra-curricular activities, balancing home and outside world activities, taking adequate rest, good food, somewhat adequate sleep and the attitude of respect for everyone and everything. such rich are our kids.

A little suggestion as a parent myself:

  • Do some window shopping – for the venues open for your kid as study tutor, learning skill/art/ mental maths/dance/ karate, extracurricular etc. that will help them plan their routine, time food and commute, most importantly the physical exercise in the process that is lacking by large.
  • Listen to kids dreams/ plans – we often suppress due to our limited knowledge or due to the risk involved and most often the family finance/ category-wise selection or location or refrain perception.
  • Allow their ideas to germinate – tell them to try and you will take care instead of telling them they will fail. It is like when an infant falls and no one notices he will seldom cry and get up and get back to play. allow them to try, they succeed they learn, they fail, they will learn what went wrong.
  • Encourage out-of-the-box ideas and teams – there are a fixed group of options one thinks and a fixed lot of friends or team mates they encounter with every assignment. it is important to try a different batch not changing all at a single time though.
  • Mature with time and age but with correct exposure they will learn and grow better – concerted efforts when you believe in them, believe in their time spent for studies and play, believe in them when they walk to you with their marks, believe in them when someone complains against them, just appreciate, atleast acknowledge any good not necessary anything they do.

You are doing a great job creating socially responsible citizens of the country. Kudos.
