Becoming a Builder: The Power of Value-Based Leadership in Today’s World

In today’s tumultuous world, characterized by political upheaval, global health crises, the relentless pressures of social media, and a myriad of other challenges, leaders find themselves navigating complex decisions with increasing frequency. It is crucial for leaders to approach our roles not as positions of superiority or celebrity, but as builders of a better future.

A true leader, in essence, is a builder. A builder possesses a distinct vision for the future and dedicates themselves to inspiring, equipping, and mobilizing others to bring that vision to life through a well-defined path of strategic priorities. The ultimate goal is to construct an organization that will endure long after our own leadership has concluded. Becoming a builder requires us to shift the way we view our role and to develop a deeper relationship between our values and decisions. 

Becoming a builder necessitates a profound shift in how we perceive our role and a more profound connection between our values and choices. Our primary duty is to serve, not to be served. Leaders must prioritize the organization’s needs and the collective mission above personal objectives and ambitions. We must support and guide the team around us, recognizing that the collective effort is far more powerful than personal desires.

Our authority as leaders derives from the confidence vested in us by the community and organization that have entrusted us with this responsibility. We must honor this trust with unwavering integrity, humility, and respect. Decisions made with the authority granted to us should reflect the organization’s core values and the community’s expectations.

True confidence as a leader arises not from self-assuredness but from the quality of the team we assemble. We must have a profound understanding of our strengths and weaknesses, grounded in self-reflection and an awareness of the realities of our work. We must recognize that our weaknesses can permeate the organization, so it’s essential to surround ourselves with individuals who excel in areas where we fall short. We must trust them to bring value where we cannot and enable them to contribute to the organization’s success.

These principles of building, rather than leading, provide a robust foundation for the decision-making process. To serve our organizations effectively, we must allocate time for introspection and personal growth. Defining your own core values and cultivating a deep understanding of where they align or diverge from the organization’s values is paramount, as is reflecting on past decisions and assessing the motivations behind those decisions. Were they driven by a quest for power and authority, or did they seek to empower others and enhance our community’s well-being? A value-based leadership framework provides guidance when quick decisions are required.

My role as CEO of Avail NYC has imparted numerous lessons about the importance of listening to the needs of others, showing grace in the face of mistakes, and leading with authenticity, integrity, and humility. I approach my position with great reverence, acknowledging the weight of my authority and striving daily to uphold the trust vested in me by our organization and community. It is through these principles of building and serving that we can shape a brighter future for all.
