Why GitLab privacy-first approach will win the AI race in DevSecOps Featured

GUEST INTERVIEW: While AI is becoming pivotal to firms’ efforts to innovate using software, technology leaders want to be sure they can continue to deliver their software more quickly, responsibly and securely. DevSecOps pioneer GitLab occupies a unique seat in defining how AI and ML will impact DevSecOps in the future.

"Since 2011, we have been focused on delivering the most comprehensive suite of solutions to develop and deploy software. GitLab brings together everyone involved in the software development lifecycles – development teams, security teams, operations teams – to collaborate together on the same platform,” said Ashley Kramer, Chief Marketing & Strategy Officer, GitLab, who sat down recently for an interview with iTWire.

“DevSecOps is an evolution of DevOps and it brings everyone into the security team and builds security into the entire software development lifecycle,” explained Kramer.

GitLab’s DevSecOps Platform consolidates organisations’ tooling into a comprehensive AI-powered platform. With an unrivalled level of visibility into the code, configuration, testing, deployment, and operation of the applications it produces, GitLab is rich in data that offers opportunities for AI to deliver faster deployments, improved security and enhanced quality assurance.

In May, NASDAQ-listed GitLab released GitLab 16 which included a wide range of new AI-powered capabilities, including security, compliance, AI/ML, and value stream analytics.

Privacy, first

Australian organisations need to further digitise processes and ship software faster to remain competitive in today’s market. At the same time, AI represents a shift in the market that will have profound effects on how organisations deliver value to customers.

Security has traditionally been disjointed in the development lifecycle, tacked on at the end and often reviewed long after the developer committed their code.

Kramer, who was in town to meet with local customers, observed, “Australian companies are already on the journey with the mindset that they do need to integrate security into the process.”

When security is separate from the DevOps workflow, it becomes a potential bottleneck to delivery. DevSecOps aims to integrate security best practices in the DevOps workflow to ensure every piece of code is tested upon commit. GitLab takes that a step further by building security capabilities into the CI/CD workflow, empowering developers to identify vulnerabilities and remove them early, and by providing the security team with their own dashboard to view items not resolved by the developers.

Global GitLab research indicates that 62% of developers are using AI/ML to check code. Respondents cite improved efficiency, faster cycle times, and increased innovation as top AI benefits. However, implementing AI responsibly requires guardrails to be put in place - 79% of GitLab survey respondents said they are concerned about AI tools having access to private information or IP.

“We adopt a privacy-first approach, ensuring that organisations can be confident their intellectual property is safe within our infrastructure. We integrate AI throughout the software development lifecycle to improve cycle time, from code creation and testing to security and deployment,” shared Kramer.

Kramer draws parallels of the current buzz surrounding AI to the cloud revolution in the early 2000s. Formerly the head of cloud of another tech organisation, Kramer believes the future of AI and where the industry is headed can benefit from the lessons from the shift to the cloud.

“Cloud happened very fast, and many who embarked on it didn’t understand the security and cost implications behind it. With AI, we can make sure that what we are producing is transparent and secure. With a privacy-first approach, we can better mitigate any security concerns. People’s code is their private IP.”

There is no question that AI is dramatically changing the way teams work and the way organisations develop, secure, and operate software. To take advantage of AI, organisations should deploy AI-assisted workflows across the entire software development lifecycle and make them available to everyone involved in the delivery of software value, from security and compliance teams to product development and marketing.

GitLab’s core value of iterations and experience building their platform will certainly help organisations win the AI race and stand out from the competition.

Industry analysts seem to agree. GitLab has been recognised by Gartner as a Leader in the inaugural Gartner Magic Quadrant for DevOps Platforms. Meanwhile, Forrester has named GitLab as the only Leader in its recent Forrester WaveTM: Integrated Software Delivery Platforms.
