VMware’s approach to AI focuses on customers, tools and internal uses.

At VMware’s Explore conference, iTWire spoke with Chris Wolf, VMware’s vice president for their AI Labs. We were curious as to the focus of the lab and how it is resourced.

Here is his response.

“So we have a cross functional team, with the core being in the neighbourhood of 200 people. We've worked with groups in all of the other parts of the business, so it's quite resource intensive, and we try to be very practical. You can never be truly successful to centralise the entirety of a function because you need to have allies to drive the outcome. So we've been very deliberate in what we wanted to be central versus decentralised. Our charter is to own and drive the AI strategy and execution for the company. That includes what we've defined as three pillars of AI.

“We have a ‘smarter businesses’ pillar, which is “how do we enable our customers to take advantage of AI technologies?” You saw a lot of that on display [throughout the conference], and how we brought forth private AI this week.

“The second pillar is ‘smarter products, and services.’ So that's driving AI into our products, AI capabilities. And we have to do this in a way that's mindful of how customers might want to run the software, ensuring their privacy needs are met, their compliance needs are met. Strategically, VMware is able to provide any opportunity for interoperability going forward. So we wanted to have that strategy also centralised.

“You saw the announcements this week of our intelligent assist, and it's something that's really important to us too. For VMware, we take AI as a system technology is helping humans to be more successful. It's not a replacement, so that that positioning for us was really important.

“The third third pillar is what we call ‘smarter VMware.’ These are AI services that we're building and delivering internally. Where we look to mature and where it makes sense. So one that we shared [in a plenary session] was our software development use case. We thought it would be good, but it's actually been better than we expected.

“The best way to put it, in terms of developer satisfaction, and even cost, is superior to what we assumed. We have a large language model that we use internally for product support that we're also looking to take to customers. So internally we have focused on use cases that are important to VMware but also use cases that all of our customers have, so we can share our learnings with what we've done and what's what's worked for us.”

iTWire sees this as a commendable approach to such a complex environment.
