A tailor-made solution for WeChat game development and a solution for smart cars.

As a significant move to further penetrate the Chinese market, Unity China, an affiliate of San Fransisco-based Unity Technologies, on Wednesday unveiled a game engine customized for the region called "Tuanjie" (团结). (Note: "Tuanjie" can be translated as "Unity" in English).

A game engine is a software framework or platform used by game developers to create video games and interactive 2D or 3D applications. It provides a set of tools, libraries, and features that streamline the game development process, making it easier for developers to design, build, and run games on various platforms.

This solution can also be used in a variety of industries, including industrial design, manufacturing, and architectural design. Some popular game engine providers include Unity, Unreal Engine, CryEngine, and Godot.

Unity China's iteration, Tuanjie, is designed to address the unique demand of Chinese game developers.

Given WeChat's ubiquitous presence in China - users effortlessly manage payments, book hotels, or even indulge in lightweight gaming within the social app owned by Tencent - Unity China rolled out a tailored solution for WeChat-based gaming development.

It provides a toolkit that enables developers to design games that run natively on WeChat, while also providing seamless migration of games from other platforms such as Windows, Linux, Android and iOS to the WeChat ecosystem.

To get a slice of China's fast-growing electric vehicle sector, Unity China has also introduced a smart car-facing solution. This innovation promises a heightened smart driving experience, coupled with a more immersive human-computer interaction.

Notably, Chinese EV makers like Xpeng, NIO, and Li Auto have already adopted Unity China's offerings.

"The Unity Engine is the most important milestone since the founding of Unity China, kicking off a new journey to empower Chinese developers," said Zhang Junbo, CEO of Unity China, at the launch.

The release of the Tuanjie Engine in China coincides with the one-year anniversary of the formation of Unity China. To celebrate the occasion, Unity CEO John Riccitiello showed up in Shanghai on Wednesday for the launch event.

Since its foray into China in 2012, Unity has been the driving force behind some of the nation's gaming sensations. Titles like Tencent's "Honor of Kings" and miHoYo's "Genshin Impact" owe their immersive experiences to Unity's game engine prowess.

Navigating China's increasingly stringent data regulations, Unity restructured its China operations last August, giving birth to Unity China—a joint venture in collaboration with local enterprises. This billion-dollar JV boasts a bunch of big-name investors, including e-commerce titan Alibaba, miHoYo, TikTok's sister app Douyin, and the state-backed China Mobile.

Despite this spun-off, Unity retains majority ownership and control over the new entity.

Unity reported second-quarter 2023 earnings on August 2, with revenue of $533 million, beating Wall Street expectations of $518 million. Net loss was $192.16 million, compared with $204.16 million a year earlier.

During the earnings call with analysts, Luis Felipe Visoso, CFO of Unity, said that the company's China Create market continued to be soft.

In recent years, the Chinese government has imposed a number of regulations on the gaming industry, including restrictions on the amount of time minors can play games and the types of games that can be released. These regulations have made it more difficult for game developers to operate in China and have led to a decline in the number of new game releases.
