There are a total number of 195 countries in the world. The UN (United Nations) has 193 member countries and Two recognized independent nations (including Vatican City and Palestine), which are self-governing regions but not full-fledged countries. These countries are situated in different parts of the world and spread over various continents.

The following countries are excluded from the total of 195 countries:
- Taiwan – the UN has considered it represented by the People’s Republic of China
- The Cook Islands and Niue, both states in free association with New Zealand, are neither member states nor non-member observer states, although they are both recognized as having “full treaty-making capacity” and are members of a number of UN specialized organizations.
- Dependencies (also known as dependent territories, dependent regions, and dependent dependencies) and regions of Special Sovereignty (also known as autonomous territories) are other countries that the UN has recognized as not having their own sovereign authority.
