Alibaba Group Holding’s Taobao Tmall Commerce Group has established a logistic department to better manage deliveries.

The department is led by Chen Ming, who has experience in supply chain and logistics in Alibaba

The logistics department took nearly half a year from preparation to establishment. According to job advertisement on Taobao Tmall Commerce’s official recruitment website, the logistics department has opened up over 40 positions including strategic planning, cost management, data analysis, service provider management, and warehouse management. Headhunting firms collaborating with Taobao Tmall have also received a significant number of recruitment requests.

According to the Latepost report, Cainiao might not be the optimal choice for Tmall shipments across all categories due to its comparatively higher costs. This is why there's a consideration for involving other delivery partners to manage smaller packages more effectively.

In order to enhance the delivery speed of Tmall and compete with JD.com, nearly half of Cainiao's domestic supply chain team was directly assigned to Tmall in 2017.

However, different business units inevitably have their own considerations regarding interests. An employee at Cainiao at the time mentioned that there were disputes between the two sides regarding whether to use the brand "Cainiao" or "Tmall" for delivery. In the subsequent collaboration, Cainiao gradually established the warehousing and same-city delivery capabilities to serve Tmall Supermarket. From the perspective of Tmall Supermarket, Cainiao's service became a default and necessary option, but it didn't hold a cost advantage.

Taobao Tmall Group has initiated its 2024 campus recruitment drive targeting recent university graduates, with a projection to extend over 2000 employment opportunities. This is the first large-scale campus recruitment launched by the Taobao Tmall Group since its establishment.

Late in March, Alibaba presented its largest-ever corporate reorganization plan, which will restructure the firm into six independently operated entities, each of which will be accountable for its own revenue and expenses and report to its own CEO and board of directors.
