Now Telecom strikes deal with Celona to deliver 5G in the Philippines

By Kenn Anthony Mendoza

Internet service provider Now Telecom has inked a deal with California-based business networking company Celona to deliver next generation private wireless 5G solutions to enterprises throughout the Philippines.

According to a regulatory filing by Now, Now Telecom's parent company, the MOU will see Celona assist Now Telecom to enhance its broadband reach by rolling out standalone private wireless networks for enterprises.

Now will leverage Celona's portfolio of indoor and outdoor 5G NR (new radio) products, which was unveiled earlier this year, as part of its private wireless managed service offering.

Apart from using its products, Now will also introduce Celona's products and services to its clients in the Philippines.

In a statement, Now said the partnership will target key vertical markets such as manufacturing, oil and natural gas, logistics and transportation ports looking to automate business processes, improve productivity and streamline operations.

“As a strategic offshore hub, the Philippines represents a massive opportunity to deliver innovative private wireless solutions at scale to what is effectively an untapped market. With a best-in-class private wireless network purposely architected for the enterprise, Celona is an ideal partner to help us capitalise on this opportunity," noted Now president and CEO Henry Andrews Abes.

“We’re confident that our market-leading products and technology will play a crucial role in setting the right conditions for private networks within the Philippine market to modernise the operational efficiency and productivity of Now's enterprise customers," said Celona co-founder and CEO Rajeev Shah.

Philippine newspaper Philipine Star reported that Now Telecom is eyeing to become a key telco player in the Philippines after it received a grant from the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) earlier this year.

The Philippines is dominated by top three telcos: PLDT, Smart, and Globe. Smart is a wholly-owned wireless and digital subsidiary of PLDT.

Now Telecom will use the funds to develop a 5G standalone network infrastructure in the Philippines. The telecommunications company will be assisted by Bell Labs Consulting, represented by Nokia America, as the prime contractor to deploy 5G sites.

In 2019, Now announced it will offer 20Gbps to subscribers, but it was slapped with multiple sanctions when it misled investors by claiming to be the fourth telco player in the industry.

The report added that the company will invest at least PHP7.8 billion (US$138.9 million) over the next 10 years to maintain competition in telecommunications.
