SECURITY

In a multicloud world, businesses are facing multiple challenges in securing data. But there is an air of uncertainty around the effectiveness of current solutions.

The Global Data Protection Index, released by Dell Technologies Inc. last year, found that 67% were concerned about coping with malware and ransomware and 70% believed there was increased risk of cyber threats with remote employees.

To address these and other challenges in data protection, theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, will host the next episode of Dell’s “Navigating the Road to Cyber Resiliency” series on August 29 at 9 a.m. PT. The event will focus on valuable insights from Dell executives, learnings from Dell’s partner ecosystem, and a frontline account from a customer who lived through a potentially devastating attack and emerged stronger as a result. Industry experts will also focus on unpacking the anatomy of a ransomware attack and how to mitigate risks associated with these incursions.

“Our first cyber resiliency event was extremely successful as we set the stage for an ongoing conversation that is top of mind with all organizations and the industry at large,” said Rob Emsley, head of data protection and cyber resiliency marketing at Dell. “On August 29, we will sharpen our focus with more actionable steps and learnings every organization can use to fortify their cyber resiliency.” (* Disclosure below.)

PowerProtect enhancements

In mid-July, Dell added orchestration capabilities to its data protection software and enhanced storage integrations, recovery control and virtualization features for PowerProtect Data Manager. Application owners can take advantage of centralized management and orchestration for backup and recovery of multiple PowerStore clusters.

Enhancements were also added for Dell’s PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance to focus on supportability for workload capabilities. New layers of cyber vault protection were added, and customers can configure storage units to meet regulatory standards and ensure data immutability.

Dell’s recent announcements highlight an important shift, as the vulnerability of business lines to attack drive security conversations around enterprise protection. Organizations are more broadly focused on cyber resilience, according to Jim Shook, director of cybersecurity and compliance practice at Dell, who spoke to theCUBE during Episode 1.

“I’ve been talking to our customers now about cyber resilience and recovery from ransomware destruction for eight years,” said Shook, in an interview with theCUBE earlier this year. “We’ve moved from having just IT and infrastructure at the table to talk about these things. Sometimes it’s the C-suite, sometimes it’s heads of business lines, but that’s been a really important development.”

AI for unstructured data

If there is a bullseye for attackers in enterprise cybersecurity today, it is the realm of unstructured data. Malicious actors are targeting unstructured data because it often contains sensitive information that can be sold on the dark web and the sheer volume of unstructured data increases its value. Dell’s Unstructured Data Solutions act as a data layer to boost overall cyber resiliency. The company integrates artificial intelligence and machine learning software to detect and analyze suspicious activity in real time. Proactive measures are triggered when a threat is detected.

Dell’s approach provides yet another example of how AI is impacting the cybersecurity landscape. As generative AI applications become more widespread, attackers and defenders are maneuvering to leverage the technology for either sowing chaos or building an effective bulwark against unwanted intrusion.

“It becomes a cat-and-mouse game that moves much faster than it does now,” said Avivah Litan, a distinguished analyst at Gartner Inc., during a recent interview with SiliconANGLE. “Whoever has the most effective generative AI cybersecurity offense or defensive capability wins in the short run. Over time, the sides equalize.”
