NBN Co, UTS form research agreement to push fibre capabilities

By Kenn Anthony Mendoza

NBN Co has formed a five-year research agreement with University of Technology Sydney to study artificial intelligence and push the “capability of fibre,” offering insights that could help advance broadband technologies and to improve performance of the network.

It will give the opportunity to attract women in STEM fields to work on a “continent-sized piece of vital national infrastructure” in the Australian telecommunications sector.

“We expect that ten years from now our network will carry three times more data than it does today. That pace of change means we need to be ready to evolve our network and continue to develop our capabilities,” said NBN chief engineering officer John Parkin.

“This agreement will allow industry insights to solve real world problems by applying cutting edge research, that will ultimately make the internet experience better for millions of Australian homes and businesses.”

The joint effort was named Astrid (Advancing STEM, Technology Research, Innovation and Deployment).

“Astrid opens new doors of opportunity for researchers and students to engage with some of the key challenges, while promoting diversity in STEM and bringing Australian innovation to the forefront on a global stage,” said UTS vice-chancellor, president, and professor Andrew Parfitt.

NBN Co and UTS previously formed a research partnership in 2018.
