Vivo unveiled a new image processing chip for enhanced phone photography

Chinese phone maker Vivo revealed its latest image processing chip V3 along with updates to its image technologies at a special event in China on July 30.

The brand’s latest customized V3 chip adopts a 6nm process and incorporates a newly designed architecture and second-generation Frame Info Tunneling (FIT) technology. The technology upgrade is claimed to deliver a 4K cinema-like bokeh, automatic subject focus detection and switching, cinema-like skin optimization, and cinematic color processing.

Vivo says this makes the company the first Android phone maker capable of enabling 4K cinema-quality portrait video, complete with post-processing capabilities.

Vivo hasn’t disclosed who its partner was in the chip’s design and manufacture.

In addition to the chip, Vivo has also introduced a new pack of algorithms in image processing. The company's new vivo Origin Imaging Engine (VOIE) enhances image quality, color, and tone.

Optical giant Zeiss and Vivo also jointly showcased their latest periscope lens module with a new standard named Vario-Apo-Sonnar. A key tech in it, the APO, aims to minimize chromatic aberration, a common optical flaw occurring in high-contrast areas. The new lens is also purported to feature creamy bokeh and macro shooting capabilities.

Vivo and Zeiss also previewed the next flagship model in the X series, touting an upgraded version of Zeiss’ signature T* coating technology aimed at producing clearer images by further cutting down on reflectivity.
