In a startling revelation, a pair of adolescent males from Hamilton, Ontario, has been accused of purloining more than $4 million in cryptocurrencies, specifically bitcoin (BTC) and ether (ETH). The victims of this meticulously planned cyber heist are reported to be an unsuspecting American man, who fell prey to an intricate “spear phishing attack.”

The local news agencies released details of the case in June 2023, stating that the Hamilton police had combined forces with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the Secret Service Electronic Crimes Task Force to scrutinize the actions of these teenagers.

According to Constable Krista-Lee Ernst from the Hamilton police, the malefactors, aged 17, utilized a well-executed spear phishing strategy to hoodwink their victim into surrendering a staggering $4.2 million in cryptocurrencies.

A Detailed Look into the Deceptive Operation by the Hamilton Teens

In this case, the young perpetrators from Hamilton, identified by their fabricated aliases “Felon” and “Gaze,” impersonated customer support team members from the renowned American crypto exchange, Coinbase. They aimed to seize control of the victim’s crypto account on the platform.

Following their successful intrusion into the account, the adolescents had unrestricted access to the victim’s digital assets stored on the platform.

According to the police reports, the teens utilized some of the stolen funds to purchase the sought-after Instagram username “@zombie,” a highly coveted identifier in the gaming community. After their arrest, the authorities confiscated digital assets worth approximately $13.4 million.

The aftermath of this case resulted in the arrest of both teenagers. However, only one of the two was charged with theft exceeding $5,000 and possession of property or proceeds obtained through illicit means. The other teen was subsequently released.
