Video Transcript

- It's almost July 4th. And you know what that means? Fireworks. 60% of consumers planning to watch fireworks this year as part of their 4th of July celebrations. That's up from 46% last year. This is all according to the latest data out from Numerator.

So here to discuss what to expect this July 4th holiday and what that means for the firework industry, I want to bring in Phil Grucci. He's CEO and creative director of Fireworks by Grucci. Phil, it's great to see you here. So when we compare where we are today to where we were a year ago, lots of talk just about the shortage of fireworks. People weren't going to be able to get their hands on them. And then if they did, it was going to cost a heck of a lot more. What are you seeing this year?

PHIL GRUCCI: Well, we're seeing the supply chain is loosened a lot. So that question of whether there's stock available on the consumer side. So our sector is in the entertainment business side, the public display side.

But on the consumer side, which is where all that fear was coming from is whether you're going to get your fireworks, that is loosened as well. Our supply side from both Europe and from Asia has loosened shipping, has gotten a little bit better than it was last year and the year before that. So we have plenty of fireworks this year, I can assure you that.

- Good to know. And here, just based on what's happened over the last few years where we've emerged on the other side of the pandemic, things normalizing. Are we seeing the fireworks budgets going back up? And where are some of the biggest displays?

PHIL GRUCCI: We are seeing the budgets coming back to 2019 levels and the volume of firework displays that we had back in 2019. Actually, we're up about 30% on that. But where the larger displays are, we have lost-- we produce about 67 shows between here and New York all the way out to Hawaii to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and down to SeaWorld Florida.

Virgin Galactic rocket plane poised for first commercial flight to edge of space

A twin-fuselage jet stood ready on Thursday to carry a Virgin Galactic rocket plane with a three-man crew from Italy into the New Mexico sky for a high-altitude launch of the company's first flight of paying customers to the edge of space. The two Italian air force colonels and an aerospace engineer from the National Research Council of Italy were due to join their Virgin Galactic instructor and the spaceplane's two pilots on a suborbital ride expected to take the six men about 50 miles (80 km) above the desert floor. The flight marks a decisive moment for Virgin Galactic Holding Inc, the space tourism venture founded by British billionaire Richard Branson in 2004, as it inaugurates commercial service following several years fraught with development setbacks.

Patients Can’t Get Some Lifesaving Drugs. What’s Causing the Shortages.

Shortages of low-price generic drugs are frightening doctors and hurting cancer patients this month, as the perennial problem rears back into focus. U.S. drug shortages are nothing new, but patients’ recent inability to access some lifesaving medicines has gripped public attention, raising questions about why the U.S. healthcare system can’t maintain a consistent supply of critical generic drugs. The shortages drawing the most attention in recent weeks are impacting patients suffering from a range of cancers, who rely on the generic chemotherapy drugs cisplatin and carboplatin to battle their diseases.

Nvidia sees permanent loss of opportunities from China export curbs

U.S. officials are considering tightening an export control rule designed to slow the flow of AI chips to China by clamping down on the amount of computing power the chips can have, according to two people familiar with the matter. Last October, Washington issued a sweeping set of rules aimed at stalling China's chip industry while the United States pours billions of dollars in subsidies into its own. "Over the long term, restrictions prohibiting the sale of our datacenter graphic processing units to China, if implemented, would result in a permanent loss of opportunities for the U.S. industry to compete and lead in one of the world’s largest markets and impact on our future business and financial results," Nvidia's Chief Financial Officer Colette Kress said.

Exclusive-Exxon Mobil expands lithium bet with Tetra Technologies deal

Exxon Mobil has agreed to develop more than 6,100 lithium-rich acres in Arkansas with Tetra Technologies Inc, the second move this year by the oil giant for control of assets needed to produce the electric vehicle battery metal. Exxon's rapid expansion into the lithium sector comes amid growing interest by traditional energy companies and others into emerging technologies that aim to boost global supply of the ultralight metal. Tetra, which produces chemicals for water treatment and recycling, earlier this week said it had signed an agreement with a company known as Saltwerx to develop 6,138 acres of salty brine deposits in Arkansas that are filled with lithium and bromine, although it provided few additional details.

US yield curve inversions deepen as Fed signals higher rates

Several parts of the U.S. Treasury yield curve have reached deeper levels of inversion, a sign that bond investors are increasingly worried about an economic slowdown as the Federal Reserve looks set to raise interest rates further. An inverted yield curve occurs when yields on shorter-dated Treasuries rise above those for longer-term ones, reflecting bets that the central bank will need to cut rates to buoy an economy hurt by higher borrowing costs. The yield curve's inversions deepened in June, after Fed Chair Jerome Powell indicated that the central bank would likely raise rates two more times this year.
