Australians want more-secure mobile apps: survey

Australian consumers' concerns about mobile app security include fraud, apps being hacked, and fake apps, according to research conducted for mobile app security vendor Appdome.

According to Appdome's latest Australian Consumer Expectations of Mobile App Security study, more than a quarter of Australian consumers fear their mobile apps will be breached and want mobile developers to invest more in delivering robust cyber protection in their apps.

The top two fears were 'Concern about falling victim to fraud' (56 percent) and 'having an app hacked' (52 percent).

Developers that do not care about users' security was cited by 27.6 percent of respondents. And most (83.9 percent) respondents regard security as being at least as important as new features in apps.

The fastest growing fears are around on-device malware (up 104.8 percent since 2021) and developers who release unprotected apps (up 225 percent).

Unsurprisingly, apps that use personal data are of particular concern, with 51.9 percent of respondents saying they should have the highest levels of protection. This includes mobile banking, wallet and payments, social media, and health and wellness apps.

"Australians have high expectations of cyber security, anti-fraud and anti-malware defence in mobile apps and want developers to hear them," said Appdome CEO Tom Tovar.

"Security is right up there with the top features demanded by Australian consumers and the risk to their transactions, data and use should be taken just as seriously as the best features in the app."

He added "Australians are very sophisticated when it comes to the mobile app security, anti-fraud and malware defence they expect in the Android and iOS apps they use.

"They aren't shy about saying they expect advanced protection from malware, trojans, hacking and fraud inside the mobile app."

It seems we are unforgiving of failure: almost half the respondents said they wouldn't just stop using an app if it was hacked or breached, they would tell their friends to do the same.

And even if merely it came out that app data wasn't being protected (ie, without a breach occurring), around two-thirds would stop using that app, with a majority of them advising friends to follow suit.

"Even brands that haven't had the misfortune to experience an attack may find their customers switching to other mobile brands, if consumers perceive the mobile app isn't secure," said Tovar.

"That switch is more pronounced if an attack happens, of course."

Perceptions of security are potent: 91.1% of Australian consumers stating they would promote brands on social media, recommend to their friends and family or write positive reviews on the app stores if they were protected.

"There's a strong message here for brands and mobile developers alike," said Tovar.

"Give the Australian consumer the protection from hacking, fraud and malware they demand, tell them you're doing so and show them in the app, and they'll reward you."

Appdome recently announced MOBILEBot Defense, which helps developers secure the mobile apps they create.
