Swedish EV maker Polestar partners with Meizu to develop operating system in Chinese EVs

June 20, 2023 6:05 pm

Polestar, the Swedish electric vehicle manufacturer, has established a collaborative partnership with Xingji Meizu, a prominent company specializing in mobile phones and consumer electronics. Together, they aim to develop an advanced operating system exclusively for Polestar cars sold in China.

This joint venture exemplifies the ongoing efforts of the Geely group to tailor automobiles specifically to meet the preferences and needs of Chinese consumers. It is worth noting that Meizu is under the ownership of Geely chairman Li Shufu, who also happens to be one of the major investors in Polestar and holds a controlling stake in its largest shareholder, Volvo Cars.

Polestar, a company that currently manufactures all its vehicles in China, has announced that the upcoming operating system will be built upon Xingji Meizu's Flyme Auto system. This system, launched earlier this year, will be integrated with in-car applications and seamlessly connect with customers' mobile phones.

Polestar plans to relocate approximately 130 of its commercial staff in China to the newly formed company, which will serve as the exclusive entity responsible for Polestar sales and service within the country. In this joint venture, Polestar will hold a 49% ownership stake, while Xingji Meizu will own the remaining 51%.

Over the past decade, Meizu has made efforts to establish itself as a Chinese competitor to the Android operating system, but it only holds a small market share. The Flyme Auto OS developed by Xingji Meizu will be seamlessly incorporated into multiple electric vehicles (EVs), including Geely's Lynk & Co 08. This integration will enhance the functionalities and features of these EVs.
