(Bloomberg) -- Jack Ma, the Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. co-founder who has largely stepped back from the company, made an appearance Saturday at an event co-organized by the retailer’s research arm.

Ma attended the final round of the Alibaba Global Mathematics Competition held in Hangzhou and spent time interacting with contestants and teachers, according to an online post by the Damo Academy.

The visit to Hangzhou — where Alibaba is headquartered — marks a rare appearance by the Chinese billionaire, who dropped out of public sight after he criticized Chinese regulators in 2020. Since then, he has been traveling outside the country and has made infrequent appearances back in the mainland.

Ma earlier this year joined the University of Tokyo’s Tokyo College as a visiting professor. A former teacher, he has also accepted a position as an honorary professor at the University of Hong Kong.

Earlier this week, Alibaba President Michael Evans said Ma is “alive” and “happy,” CNBC reported. The billionaire is teaching and also spending more time in China, Evans added.

Oil slides more than $1 on China growth uncertainties

TOKYO (Reuters) -Global oil prices fell more than $1 on Monday, backing off last week's gains, as questions over China's economy outweighed OPEC+ output cuts and the seventh straight drop in the number of oil and gas rigs operating in the United States. Brent crude lost $1.15, or 1.5%, to trade at $75.46 a barrel by 0350 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was down $1.09, or 1.5%, to $70.69. "China's economic uncertainties may have caused the selloff after a two-day rebound in oil markets ahead of The People's Bank of China's (PBOC) decision on its loan prime rates (LPR) this week," said Tina Teng, an analyst at CMC Markets.

Asian shares started cautiously on Monday after their best weekly run in five months, as investors looked ahead to China's rate decision and U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's testimonies for clues on the path ahead. Both S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq futures were mostly flat after Wall Street's bullish run met resistance on Friday.
