The Employee Retention Credit was created to give support to businesses during the pandemic. When most places were closed, employees home, and businesses in the negative, the credit aimed to help businesses through. In particular businesses that lost revenue, were shut down, or that served a particular purpose can easily qualify.

The credit is awarded to businesses that retained employees on their payroll. While the program itself ended in 2021, businesses that made it through the pandemic are still owed credit. Qualifying is as easy as reporting detailed wages and the effects of the pandemic. The credit is something many businesses took advantage of during the pandemic, yet it applies to many even today.

In terms of claiming the credit, all a business has to do is file a tax amendment. After doing so businesses can expect up to tens of thousands per employee. The smaller the business, the less employees, the more applicable the credit. Naturally not all businesses will apply, but it’s certainly worth a try. At the very least, contacting a credit league or similarly qualified business is the first step in claiming the credit. If it’s something a business has already earned, it’s on them to utilize it.
