指挥乌军收复赫松市的乌军司令科瓦丘克(Andriy Kovalchuk)当时证实，乌军用海马士打卡科夫卡水坝其中一个水闸做测试，看能否让水位因无法宣泄而升高并阻碍俄军通行，说测试颇为成功。
莫斯科时报(The Moscow Times)指出，部分从公开来源情报(OSINT)搜集资讯的军事部落客质疑水坝遭蓄意破坏的说法，认为是先前炮击积累受损，导致水坝上方结构终于承受不住蓄水压力而崩坏。
