Major Chinese phone vendor Honor set up a new R&D firm in Shanghai on Wednesday, according to the business registration databaseQichacha.
The firm, named Shanghai Honor Smart Technology Development Co., Ltd. [Our translation], covers development in fields including semiconductors and chips.
An entity of Honor terminal business fully controls the new firm, according to Qichacha.
The new firm is one of five R&D centers of Honor in China, focusing on core software for the terminal side, graphics algorithms, communications, photography, and other areas, as Honor told the Chinese media outlet ITHome on Wednesday.
Chinese phone vendors like Xiaomi tended to develop their own chips to boost their device experience to compete with rivals, like power control and image processing. A major player in China, Oppo, justmade an exit from this field, dismissing its chip-developing firm Zeku last month, which has over 2,000 employees.
Honor is the fourth smartphone vendor in China, with a16.0% market share by shipment in the first quarter of 2023, according to IDC.
