The Parsons School of Design teamed up with Roblox for a new semester-long class where students were tasked with designing garments for the digital realm this year.

The course aims to prepare students for a fashion world that's increasingly merging with the digital world, The Verge reported. Students will learn to design and sell digital garments on Roblox, the online gaming platform.

Parsons and Roblox did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

A study from Parsons and Roblox found that half of their users change their avatar's clothing weekly, and nearly 3 out of 4 respondents said they would spend money on digital fashion. Roblox has a lot of potential customers. The platform has more than 66 million daily users, per the WSJ.

The digital garment space is still emerging, but it has the potential to create new revenue streams for designers. Digital designs on platforms like Fortnite have already proved to be profitable on these platforms. Epic Games made nearly $50 million from NFL designs purchased by players, The Verge noted.

The digital fashion sector will be worth $50 billion by 2030, according to Morgan Stanley. And luxury fashion brands, including Gucci and Burberry, are already designing for the metaverse and Roblox, Insider reported.

One Roblox designer told Insider he made up to $90,000 a month from selling his digital designs, including a pair of diamond earrings that cost 75 Robux or about 94 cents.

Designing for the digital realm has a few key benefits over the physical world.

"You can simulate materials, test patterns, and even stitch without wasting real-world products," Roblox designer RynityRift told Insider. "The radius of people I can reach — as an up-and-coming designer — is so much greater in the virtual world than real world."
