对天文学有所了解的朋友应该知道，在传统认知中，我们所在的银河系是一个棒旋星系，被广泛接受的理论是共有四条旋臂，都是从内到外的特殊形态。
不过， 中国科学家现在提出了新的银河系旋臂形态描述： 由内部对称的两条旋臂，以及外部多条不规则旋臂组成，更像是一个普通的多旋臂星系。
这一成果来自中科院紫金山天文台研究员徐烨团队，以及中科院国家天文台团队，相关成果已在国际学术期刊《天体物理学杂志》上发表。
在宇宙中，旋涡星系的形态主要分为宏象、多旋、絮状三种结构。
