What is artificial intelligence? Well, there are different types of artificial intelligence.

The big one that is making news today is called “Generative AI”.

The technology behind ChatGPT (an AI that generates text) and its sibling, Dalle-E2 (an AI that generates images), has caused a firestorm. In just two months, ChatGPT has gained 100 million users.

What is AI (artificial intelligence)?

Artificial Intelligence, also known as AI, is a field of computer science that focuses on creating machines that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. These tasks can range from simple ones like recognizing speech or images, to complex ones such as natural language processing and decision making. 

But let’s make it really simple. 

AI can now write an article that looks like it came from a human. ChatGPT passes the “Turing Test”. That means “a human being should be unable to distinguish the machine from another human being.” 

What is “generative” artificial intelligence?

Generative AI is a subfield of artificial intelligence that focuses on creating models and algorithms that can generate new, original content, such as images, music, text, or videos, that have never been seen before.

Generative AI uses deep learning techniques, specifically generative models, to create new data that resembles the data it was trained on.

The generative model is a type of neural network that is trained on a dataset of examples, and it learns the underlying patterns and structures in the data. Once the model has learned these patterns, it can generate new data that resembles the original dataset.

For example, a generative model that was trained on images of cats can generate new images of cats that have never been seen before.

Generative AI has many applications in various fields, including art, music, and entertainment, as well as more practical applications, such as data augmentation and content creation. Here are 4 examples of generative AI in action:

1. Image Generation: Generative models can create new, realistic images that resemble the training dataset. For example, the StyleGAN model can generate images of human faces that look like real people but have never existed before.
2. Music Generation: Generative models can create new music pieces by learning the underlying patterns in the music. For example, the Magenta project by Google has created a model that can generate original music based on user input.
3. Natural Language Processing: Generative models can create new text that resembles the training dataset. For example, OpenAI’s GPT-3 model can generate realistic text, including articles, essays, and even stories, that sound like they were written by humans.
4. Data Augmentation: Generative models can be used to create synthetic data that can be used to augment training datasets. For example, if there is a lack of data in a particular class, a generative model can create new data that resembles that class to improve the accuracy of the machine learning model.

Here is a very simple example of artificial intelligence. 

Humans like to create content, write and produce articles and blog posts. ChatGPT provides the technology to write in a simple text request that looks like this: 

“Write me a 1,000 word article on the topic of “What is AI or Artificial Intelligence”. 

ChatGPT will then write an article that will pass the “Turing Test.” And it will be done in a few seconds!
