Launch your podcast or stream with the Sennheiser Profile USB microphone

By David M Williams

High-fidelity audio engineering company Sennheiser has released a stunning cardioid condenser microphone that presents an easy and stylish solution for streaming and podcasting, as well as all other kinds of content where you need your voice heard but with a minimum of fuss.

The Sennheiser Profile USB microphone combines professional sound with direct accessibility of all functions. It comes as a table stand version and a Profile Streaming Set with a three-point self-locking boom arm. Either way, you get the award-winning high-quality Sennheiser KE10 condenser capsule. This unit features a cardioid pick-up pattern that perfectly captures the streamer's voice, avoiding other sounds around you, including those coming from your computer speakers.

The Profile was designed with the ease-of-use front in mind. Sennheiser product manager Benny Franke said, “When you are recording your podcast or doing a live stream, you already have to worry about the content, perhaps room treatment, the camera set-up, interaction with your audience – the last thing you need in this situation is a complex audio set-up. So we tried to create tech that gets out of the way of your creative process.”

Sennheiser product manager Dennis Stegemerten also says, “The design is simple and efficient and does not overwhelm you. Profile is simply plugged into the USB-C port of your computer or tablet – your device will automatically recognise the microphone, and it’s ready to capture your voice. There is no need for an interface or any software, no additional window to keep open so that you can control the mic settings. One intuitive touch of a control directly on the mic – that’s all that is needed.”

Control-wise, it's dead simple. The microphone features a soft-touch, no-noise mute button, along with gain control, and mix control - to set the balance between your voice and the computer/tablet audio, and a volume control for headphone monitoring. Inputs include a USB-C socket and a 3.5mm socket for headphones.

The package includes a lengthy USB-C to USB-C cable so it will plug straight into most laptops and tablets, but you may need a USB-A to USB-C adapter if you don't have any USB-C ports.

Nicely, the microphone features coloured LED lights to keep you informed of its status with instant feedback. When green, it's good to go. But, if yellow, the microphone is clipping and you need to reduce your microphone volume. When muted, the LED is red.

iTWire tested the Sennheiser Profile USB Streaming Set - which features the exact same microphone as the desktop stand version, but with the three-point self-locking arm. We found it delivered a natural, warm sound right out of the box. The self-locking arm was easy to clamp onto our desk and adjust into the perfect position. It swivels, bends, and gives you great flexibility in where you place it, ensuring it's out of your way while also being right where you need it. The microphone features 3/8" and 5/8" connectors so you can also use any third-party stand too. The USB-C cable with the streaming set is a whopping three metres, and you can also run it through the arm for great cable management.

The microphone has a frequency range of 20 to 20,000Hz, and a sensitivity of up to 80 dB SPL, ranging from -10 dBFS at max gain to -50 dBFS at min gain.

Sennheiser states its brand lives and breathes audio, and it is driven by a passion to create audio solutions that make a difference. And, really, the Sennheiser Profile USB microphone embodies this thoroughly. It's a high-quality, professional microphone that simply plugs in and works. You don't have to fiddle with complex settings, and it helps you sound your best to ensure your content is clear and understood. And that, in turn, makes a huge difference in your delivery and persuasion.

For best results, Sennheiser says to maintain a working distance of around 15cm depending on your voice and the type of recording.

The Sennheiser Profile USB microphone table stand version retails for $239, and the Sennheiser Profile USB Streaming Set retails for $349.

Want to see it in action? Ok! Check out my inaugural 60 seconds of Dad Jokes video here ... with the Sennheiser Profile USB Streaming Set front and centre, and doing all the heavy lifting. You might not like my jokes, but you can certainly tell that is clear, crisp audio.

And, hey, if you don't want to see me (understandable), you can let Sennheiser tell the story here:
